Rashes and Contact Dermatitis

One of the most common reasons for a visit to the Dermatologist is for an unexplained rash. Frequently this turns out to be Contact Dermatitis which is an inflammation of the skin that results from direct contact with certain substances. Common culprits include metals, cosmetic ingredients, cleaning products, rubber, fragrances, soaps or plants such as poison ivy or poison oak. The red, itchy rash isn't usually life-threatening or contagious, but it can be very uncomfortable.

There are several things to note to determine if you should see a Dermatologist about a rash:

  • The rash/pain distracts you from your daily routines or sleep
  • You think the skin is infected
  • You've tried self-care steps without results
  • The dermatitis is recurrent

Successful contact dermatitis treatment consists primarily of identifying what's causing the inflammation. Then, if you can avoid the offending agent, the rash usually resolves itself in several weeks. Self-care measures, such as wet compresses and anti-itch creams, can help soothe your skin and reduce inflammation. If you suspect you have an allergy to a specific substance or substances a PATCH TEST is a very effective process which can determine the offending elements.

One of our doctors, Alison Ehrlich MD is an expert in contact dermatitis and Dermskin is one of the few dermatology offices in the area that offers comprehensive Patch Testing.

During patch testing we place small amounts of different substances on your skin under an adhesive coating. Your doctor then checks for a skin reaction under the small patches. Click Here to see our evaluation form.

Med Spa or Day Spa? That is the Question!

What is the difference between a medical (med) spa and a day spa?
Can I receive the same services and benefits?

The answer is a big NO!

A Med Spa, short for medical spa, offers a higher level of cosmetic treatments than a traditional “day spa” and is operated under the direct or in-direct supervision of a medical doctor.

At Rockledge MedSpa, Dr. Palestine, our Medical Director, is intimately involved in all the treatments and ensures the use of the latest techniques, treatments and procedures. Our cosmetic staff of medical professionals, estheticians, and cosmetic consultants provide a comprehensive approach to caring for our patients before, during and after the procedures take place.  Med Spas also utilize and sell pharmaceutical grade skin care products, (often unavailable without a doctor’s approval) that produce better results than can be achieved at a day spa.

The Rockledge Med Spa (formally DerMediSpa) established in 2002 is part of the Dermatology & Clinical Skin Care Center and provides comprehensive skin care for patients with a staff of board certified dermatologists, a Mohs skin cancer surgeon, a plastic surgeon, and medical estheticians. Some of the services offered are dermal filler injections, Botox®, laser hair removal, medical peels, Fraxel®, Thermage® and more. The medical spa is the perfect balance between clinical services and luxury.  As Dr. Palestine says “we blend beauty with medicine.”

Charity Beyond our Walls

Many of our doctors go beyond our walls and reach out not only to the local community but around the world. Recently the Derm Center’s plastic surgeon Dr. Khalique Zahir traveled to the Philippines with Feed the Hungry Medical Mission and to the Sudan with the Islamic Medical Association of North America (IMANA).

On each expedition Dr. Zahir provided an array of much needed surgical procedures including repair of cleft lips to beautify smiles on the needy.

In Sudan, he operated from dawn to dusk on 61 children ranging in age from 1-21. One family, who was not scheduled heard about IMANA and traveled for over one week from Darfur to reach Khartoum. The dedicated team fit them in and another 5 year old has something to smile about.

The mission of IMANA is to provide a forum and resource for Muslim physicians and other health care professionals, to promote a greater awareness of Islamic medical ethics and values among Muslims and the community-at-large, to provide humanitarian and medical relief, and to be an advocate in health care policy. Dr. Zahir is the President of IMANA.
