Simple Skin Checks Can Save Your Life
By Iris Kedar Rubin, MD
| Recently a family friend came
to see me for laser treatment of her brown spots. I noticed a darker
brown spot on her leg with asymmetry of the borders. Although she
thought that it had been present for several years and had not
changed, I recommended a biopsy because of the atypical features. |
|
The biopsy showed melanoma in-situ, the earliest stage
of melanoma. Finding a melanoma at the earliest stage may have saved
her life, since melanomas can potentially metastasize and be life threatening.
The Dermatology & Clinical Skin Care Center recommends
a monthly self-check of your body and a visit to us once a year for a "Well
Skin Check". If you have had skin cancer previously or have had significant
exposure to the sun earlier in your life, then discuss with your doctor
the best time frame for return visits, which may be more often than once
a year. You should schedule an appointment to have a thorough skin
examination for skin cancer if you have any of the following:
- New or changed growth
- Family history of skin cancer
- Personal history of skin cancer
- History of blistering sunburns
- History of exposure to ultraviolet rays from the
sun, tanning beds or sun lamps
- Numerous moles
- Large, asymmetrical, or unusual-looking moles
- Fair skin
- The tendency to burn and freckle rather than tan,
or
- Immunosuppressive medications
My family friend is doing well today thanks to early
detection of her skin cancer. I encourage you to call the office and
schedule your screening exam. Don't delay, it could be a lifesaver!

May is Melanoma/Skin
Cancer Detection Month
The Dermatology & Clinical Skin Care Center’s
dermatologists conduct free skin cancer screenings at the Suburban
Outpatient Center during Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection Month in
May and also in November. Led by the Derm Center’s Medical
Director Roberta Palestine, Drs. Joseph Lee, Geeta Shah, Iris Kedar
Rubin and Thomas Yu volunteer their time in support of the national
program sponsored by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) and
Suburban Hospital.
On the 25th anniversary year of this program, the
AAD is proud to have helped provide 2 million screenings which detected
more than 192,500 suspicious lesions and more than 22,500 suspected
melanomas. “More than one million new cases of skin cancer
will be diagnosed in the United States this year. However,
if detected and treated early, this disease can often be cured,” Dr.
Palestine said.

SUMMER GUIDELINES
Be sure to always protect your skin from the sun. Excessive
sun exposure can cause skin cancer and lead to premature aging of the
skin. One common belief about sun protection is… “why
bother, the damage is already done?”. Although it is true
that most of our lifetime sun exposure does occur before age 18, it is
never too late to start protecting yourself.
Here are a few tips for sun safety:
- Apply SPF 30 or higher sunscreen that is broad spectrum
(protects against ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B rays) and water-resistant.
- Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours.
- Limit sun exposure during the middle of the day (10AM-4PM)
when ultraviolet rays are the strongest.
- Wear protective clothing, including a hat and sunglasses.
- Obtain vitamin D safely through diet and oral
supplementation.
- Talk to your primary care physician about
the optimal dose of vitamin D for your health.
