Beautiful Legs by Summer – Start NOW!!

Do you have “spider veins”? Spider Veins usually occur on your legs and look like, well, a spider web! The veins can be dark or light shades of purple, red or blue.

Spider Veins cause no health problems and many people get them removed for aesthetic reasons.  Spider vein treatment is called Sclerotherapy and will require a series of treatments spaced about 6 weeks apart, so consulting with one of our dermatologists now will ensure you are able to show off those new legs by summer! (Don’t wait until the summer to get started!)

Some patients get excellent results after just a few treatments, but larger veins or patients with a great number of smaller veins may need additional visits. The procedure is performed by one of our board certified dermatologists and is simple and relatively painless with no anesthesia or topical ointments needed.  A very small, thin needle with a solution is inserted into each vein. The solution irritates the vein and causes it to shrink.

After treatment you are encouraged to walk but not participate in any strenuous activity for a day or two. Also, you are required to wear thick compression hosiery and avoid the sun, which is why the treatment is most popular in the winter months.

Get started today! Call our medical office and schedule an appointment at 301-530-8300

Doctor, will this tanning bed give me skin cancer?

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the use of indoor tanning beds before the age of 35 has been associated with a significant increase in the risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Yet, more than 1 million Americans — 70 percent of whom are girls and women — visit a tanning salon each day.

You have probably heard that a tanning salon tan is less harmful than a tan from the sun. WRONG! It’s seems to make sense, since tanning beds use UVA rays and not the “bad” UVB rays, right? There are few things you should know,

  • There is no such thing as a safe tan
  • The UVA used in tanning beds are up to 15x as strong as natural sunlight
  • The risk of Melanoma increases by 800% for those who use a tanning bed more than 10 times a year¹
  • Although UVB rays are the ones that cause the sun burn, UVA rays actually penetrate deeper into the skin, so over the long term they can cause pre-mature aging, damage your immune system and increase your risk for skin cancer
If you have a history of regular sun exposure and/or tanning bed usage, we suggest you schedule an annual skin exam to screen for skin cancer.

Tattoo Removal arrives at Dermskin!

Did you know that as many as 50% of individuals with tattoos regret the
permanency of the tattoo and wish to have it removed! Now there is help.

After testing several lasers that remove tattoos as well as age spots/brown spots and other pigmented lesions, Dr. Palestine has acquired the state of the art Candela Q-switched laser called the AlexTriVantage. (Click here to download brochure.)

The three different wavelengths of this laser enable it to treat any color of tattoos: red, blue, yellow and green, etc.

Results and number of treatments vary from patient to patient depending on the age, size and type of tattoo or discoloration, color of the patient’s skin and depth to which the tattoo or pigment extends beneath the skin’s surface.

If you have age spots, freckles and birthmarks or a tattoo, please call 301-968-1200 for a medical appointment.
