Melanoma Monday
On Monday, May 2nd our doctors participated in Melanoma Monday, the annual free skin cancer screening at Suburban Outpatient Center. Every year our doctors give their time and expertise to offer free total body skin exams on this day, and they always find several skin cancers on those who come, some of them very serious. It is important to be aware of the damage sun can do to your skin, and especially important in these summer months to be vigilant about sunscreen. Please make sure that you get an annual total body skin exam, and keep your skin healthy and protected year round.
Race for the Cure
On June 4th our staff participated in Race for the Cure to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer and research.
It was a great day, and we all really enjoy walking the race as an office every year. Some of the office have been participating in this race for the last 20 years. This year we held a staff spirit contest, as you’ll see in the photos, great outfits! We rented two buses, there were 84 of us, wow! We get bigger every year.
The Importance of Seeing a Dermatologist
This story is about a long term cosmetic and medical patient of ours. During a cosmetic procedure, Dr. Palestine noticed a brown spot near her eye. The patient said she had had this for many years, and even had photos from years ago to prove that it hadn’t changed. Dr. Palestine thought it looked irregular and should be biopsied. The patient didn’t want a biopsy there, because it was on her face, close to her eye. She brought in photos showing that it had been there for a long time. But Dr. Palestine still didn’t like the look of it, and insisted on a biopsy and wouldn’t take no for an answer. Eventually the patient agreed. The biopsy showed malignant melanoma, the most severe form of skin cancer. Because of the location on the eyelid, the patient required a complex surgical procedure coordinated by eye surgeons and plastic surgeons at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. When the patient returned to our office, she gave Dr Palestine a hug for insisting on a biopsy, and saving her life.
Keeping up with Global Ideas
Our doctors, physician’s assistants, estheticians, and other staff are constantly attending conferences and seminars about the newest ideas and technology in our field. Dr. Thomas Yu recently attended the annual Mohs Surgery Meeting in Las Vegas. It provided the latest updates on skin cancer diagnosis and treatment, as well as new surgical techniques and Mohs slide preparation. Our MA Vard attended the histotechnician meeting.
Dr. Palestine just attended the World Congress of Dermatology in Seoul, South Korea. Dermatologists from all over the world attend to hear about the latest research, products, and technologies going on in the dermatology industry worldwide. This meeting is held every four years and gives great insight into the latest developments in the field. |
