Facial Wrinkles

Neuromodulators treat wrinkles by causing relaxation of the muscles underlying the wrinkles, giving a more refreshed appearance. By relaxing the muscle the wrinkle smooths away. These treatments are injected in small amounts with a tiny needle directly into the skin. The treatment may sting but is not painful. It may take 7-10 days to see effects after your treatment. The duration of the effects cannot be predicted. The effects usually last an average of 3 months, but may last longer or shorter depending on the individual. With repeated treatments over time, the effects of each injection have been shown to last longer. If you stop receiving treatments, the lines will gradually look like they did before treatment. Very rarely, people have developed antibodies against neuromodulators and treatments have stopped working.

After your treatment you will be able to return to all of your normal activities. You should, however, remain upright and not lay down for 4 hours after your treatment. After the treatment, you may have a small bruise or red spot which may last a couple of days. You may cover this with makeup.

As we age, we lose volume in our soft tissue and skin which is most noticeable in the face and the hands. This results in a saggy, hollow, or sunken appearance to the face, thin lips and a bony appearance to the hands. Fillers are injectable materials that replace this lost volume, restoring a more youthful look. Lip enhancement is performed to achieve a fuller, more plump appearance to the lips. Depending on the filler used and the area being treated, results may last up to 18 months.

Juvederm, Restylane, and Belotero are made of hyaluronic acid, a sterile, colorless gel. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar found in all living things, which holds onto water and plumps up the skin when injected. It is injected into the skin with a very fine needle. The effects of these fillers are temporary and reversible, requiring repeated injections. The results are immediate. Side effects include discomfort, swelling, bruising, and temporary asymmetry and are usually resolved within 7 days after treatment. Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) for 10 days prior to the treatment, to minimize your risk of bleeding and bruising. After treatment you may return to all of your normal activities. You may apply makeup to cover any redness or bruising.

Radiesse is a dermal filler injected below the surface of the skin to fill in unwanted lines and wrinkles. This product is made of very small, smooth calcium microspheres, which are suspended in a water-based gel. Over time, your body absorbs the gel while collagen has started to grow and infiltrate the area, replacing the gel with your own, natural tissue, and eventually being naturally absorbed into your body. Radiesse dermal fillers typically last a year or more.

Sculptra is a synthetic injectable material known as “poly-L-lactic acid” that improves subtle to deep facial wrinkes and folds. Sculptra works subtly and gradually over time for a more youthful-looking appearance. Unlike hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, Sculptra Aesthetic helps stimulate your skin’s own natural collagen production to help restore its inner structure and increase facial volume that has been lost to aging. The results from Sculptra can last up to two years.

Dozens of filling agents, called Dermal Fillers, are currently available. Your physician will evaluate your needs, and the two of you will discuss the options to determine which filler is best suited to address a particular skin imperfection.

Immediately after the treatment, you can expect slight redness, swelling, possible bruising, tenderness or an itching sensation in the treated area. This is a normal result of the injection. The discomfort is temporary and generally disappears in a few days. After a lip treatment, the lips may become swollen. This can persist for a few days. If the discomfort continues, please contact your physician. There is no limitation on activity following treatment, however we recommend avoiding upside positions (such as in yoga), or any facial rubbing (such as facials) immediately after. Due to the potential of swelling and bruising, it is recommended to schedule filler injections at least one week prior to any special occasion.
